    SPEEDS AND FEEDS FOR CARBIDE ENDMILL CUTTING TOOLS

    Solid carbide end mills should be run at higher speeds than high speed steel end mills. Many times, lighter cuts at higher speeds can improve the finish of the work piece. Speeds should be reduced when milling hard or tough materials and when taking heavy cuts. Speeds should be increased when milling softer materials or when taking light cuts.

    Generally, the feed per tooth, or chip load, may be maintained by using two, three, or four flute end mills. When peripheral milling, the highest feed rates can be achieved when the width of cut is less than the radius of the end mill. Feed rates can be increased when milling easily machined or abrasive materials. They should also be increased to eliminate chatter. The accompanying table gives recommended starting speeds and feeds of the most commonly used materials.
